Double-Decker buses are popular in the UK and some other European cities such as Berlin. Therefore, all former colonies of the British Empire in the first half of the 20th century trams were used with two levels. Surprisingly, they are still in use in Hong Kong, where trams are used exclusively with two levels.

These trams are as much a symbol of Hong Kong.





Double Decker trams were common in the United Kingdom until 1950-ies. These trams gradually losing its relevance, and the latter ceased to operate trams in Glasgow in 1962. Some of them are preserved in the National Museum Tramway in the UK, and in museums in other parts of the world. From 1910 to 1964 double-Decker trams were used in Mumbai and in Johannesburg, where out of use in 1961.

Trams began to operate in Hong Kong in 1904, and the first double-deck tram was put into operation in 1912. Initially they were open-topped and mounted inside the garden benches. They were replaced by new double-Decker trams in 1925, a total of 163 were running the tram with a closed roof. Several of them designed specifically for travelers and tourists, because the top was a viewing platform where we could see the sights of Hong Kong.





The residents of Hong Kong call these trams not only as DingDing (United's dingding) because a ringing signal, which they serve during the approach to a stop to warn pedestrians. Besides the fact that it is an effective and environmentally friendly public transport, the tram is one of the main attractions of Hong Kong.
