"Treatment of cough": Dr. Komarovsky warns of the danger!

The website publishes an article from the blog of the famous doctor, an expert, a paediatrician and TV presenter Yevgeny Komarovsky. Within the hour I was in a room with a working TV. Within eight hours, I saw the advertising of medicines, which, according to the manufacturer, it is imperative to ingest at the onset of cough.

Nerves can not stand to listen to this divorce on a national scale!

People, attention!1. The absolute most advertised drugs "cough" — it's expectorants and/or mucolytics of the so-called: drugs that increase the volume of phlegm (sputum — formed in the lung mucus) and making it more liquid, fluid (which theoretically facilitates its expectoration).

2. The vast majority of cases, when you have snot, cough and fever, is a disease of the upper respiratory tract: rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis. Expectorants increase the amount of phlegm!!! Why do you need to increase the amount of mucus in the lungs, when you have a runny nose or sore throat? Why? Because they said on TV?

3. Expectorants sometimes (rarely) necessary in some diseases of the lower respiratory tract — bronchitis, pneumonia. Bronchitis and pneumonia are treated by doctors, not people who watch too much TV.

4. Expectorants are reduced, and increase the cough, stimulating expectoration. But with a deficit of body fluids and/or when dry air in the room expectorants are unable to manifest its effect: cough increase, but ease do not bring!!! At the same time, if you drink a lot, and the room clean, cool and moist air, so expectorants are needed: sputum under such conditions it becomes viscous and easily clears throat without any medication. Not surprisingly in this context, a phrase from a very famous and, of course, nenashensky medical textbook: "the effectiveness of expectorants in comparison with fluids not proven".

5. In children, coughing (cough impulse) is much weaker than in adults. After taking expectorants children are often not able to cough up increased amounts of sputum. It accumulates in the lower respiratory tract, and this is the main reason of obstructive bronchitis and pneumonia. Give to dissolve and to put the child to sleep in a warm and dry room (and these rooms we have 90%) — the easiest way to organize complications. But if in addition to this a stuffy nose, and increased body temperature — so the chances to turn the weekly drops monthly treatment pneumonia maximum. It is not surprising that in many countries, mucolytics are strongly not recommended for children the first 5 years of life, and give them to children under 2 years old is generally a crime. But we were lucky! We (in Europe) all in a row, without a prescription, and advertise in the evening Prime on TV.

6. Again, for those who still do not understand: the television should not replace the brain. This rule works in politics, and coughing. Do not buy expectorants without the direct guidance of a physician. If the doctor at home has appointed expectorants child under the age of 5 years — look for another doctor if the child is under 2 years old is urgently looking for another doctor.

7. Want to ease the cough? Then:

  • dress warmly;
  • make sure the room was clean, cool (16-20 °C) and dry air (relative humidity 40-70%);
  • watch out for nasal breathing (it must be!): frequent washing with salt solutions and, if absolutely unbearable, decongestants;
  • drink plenty of warm fluids;
  • find someone who will make a diagnosis;
  • turn off the TV.
