Engineers converted the waste water of the brewery in the storage of energy

Engineers University of Colorado boulder has developed an innovative technology that uses bio-organisms from the wastewater of the brewery to create carbonaceous materials used for the manufacture of batteries.

This unique Union "Breweries and batteries" can create a win-win opportunity to reduce the cost of wastewater treatment for Breweries and provide them with a renewable and natural source of energy based on fuel cells.

"Breweries use about seven barrels of water for every barrel of beer," says Tyler Huggins, graduate student, Department of Civil, environmental and architectural engineering and lead author of the new study. "This sewage cannot simply be reset to the sewers, because they require additional filtering and purification."In laboratory tests, the researchers added fungal spores in neurospora crassa in the waste water of the brewery, and then was heated for two days and fungus was growing in the water. The fungus then filtered, baked at a temperature of 800 degrees Celsius, the result is a rich carbon material suitable for efficient use in lithium-ion batteries. Remaining after the process water is filtered out much faster and cheaper.

If you apply the process on a large scale, the Breweries can significantly reduce its expenditure on wastewater treatment, while the battery manufacturers will have access to cost-effective technologies for the production of the battery components.

The researchers concluded a partnership agreement with Avery brewing in boulder to launch a pilot program to study technology. published
