Lubart's Castle

Lutsk castle is a symbol of Lutsk city, its main sight and pride. Built in the 14th century by the Lithuanian Duke Vytautas Lyubart, who married a local Princess Bush and adopted the Orthodox faith (adopting the baptismal name of Dmitry), he was selected as a princely residence.
In the castle there are three names: Lutsk (most common), Upper (as is also the Lower castle, a crumbling) and Lubart castle (Lutsk Prince of approx. 1323-1324 and 1340-1383).

Lubart's castle is one (if not the only) of the few surviving architectural monuments of Ukraine of the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Despite the fact that the history of the castle in Lutsk lead taken from 1340, my existence, it began much earlier. In the 11th century on the castle hill was built a wooden fortress – the first fortress, which lasted two centuries and which is then replaced by a more durable stone. Lutsk castle was built for more than forty years.

In the castle, on the foundations of the princely Palace, which was adjacent to the Entrance tower, the last of Lutsk headman Y. the Czartoryski family, was elevated to the house of the district office and the gentry of the courts. Now it houses the Museum of art Department of Volyn regional Museum.

The castle has an irregular, close to the triangle shape, because of the terrain. Defensive walls of the castle in the XV century moderniziriruyutsya and adapt to the use of firearms. In some areas the height of the walls was increased, and the openings bricked up crenelate. They were replaced by two or three rows of loopholes, you have accessed via a wooden indoor galleries. The entire Palace complex was built of brick.

In the middle of the castle courtyard from the ancient times, there was the collegiate Church of John the Evangelist. In it are buried the princes of Lutsk and bishops, among them the Builder of the castle Dmytro-lyubart. Now found by archeologists on the walls of the ancient shrines, which for 600 years has been the spiritual capital of Eastern Volhynia, erected a pavilion, in which is planned the creation of the Museum.
