Homemade Soviet car "Pangolina"

A vivid example of Soviet "homemade" - the car "Pangolin" Alexander Kulygin, which saw the light in 1980. The body was glued out of fiberglass according to a plywood master model, and at the end of the work, all the matrices were destroyed, excluding the possibility of a second copy of the Pangolina.

The engine of the car, built on the basis of the VAZ "classics", was located almost in the cabin, just behind the dashboard: the body shape, more reminiscent of the Lamborghini Countach or DeLorean than the masterpieces of the domestic automotive industry, did not imply front engine placement.

The original cap, which combines the doors and part of the roof, was driven by two pneumatic cylinders (a malfunction of this system once led to the fact that Kulygin could not leave the car on his own - unlike the doors of the Lamborghini, the Pangolin cap is not balanced). In the 90s, the body was modified (removed part of the roof, welded additional beams under the bottom) and repainted.

Despite the fact that the engine and other units were taken from VAZ production cars, Pangolina, due to its light body and reduced aerodynamic drag, surpassed them in speed characteristics, developing speeds up to 180 km / h. For the sake of obtaining license plates and permission to travel abroad, Kulygin had to make a number of compromises, changing the design of the car. In the 90s, the designer emigrated to the United States, and in 2004 tragically died in an accident.
