A legendary burial site with thousands of “worst video game ever” has been unearthed

In the desert of the state of New Mexico at the weekend excavated a large-scale burial of the catriges with the “cult” video game E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 console. According to legend, Atari buried hundreds of thousands of unsold copies of the E.T. in 1982, just before the company collapsed. Excavations were conducted for a documentary that will be released in a few months.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is considered one of the worst and most important video games in history. Atari paid about $20 million for the license, but the game was so terrible that no one wanted to buy it. Low sales were one of the factors behind Atari’s financial losses and the ensuing global video game market crisis, which led to a change in the entire market.

A former Atari manager told The Associated Press that about 700,000 E.T. cartridges were buried in New Mexico from the company's nearby factory. However, according to Polygon, this number is slightly exaggerated.
