Catchment tower WarkaWater

 

 

About 767 million people suffer from water shortage. More than 1,400 children every day at the age of five years die because of lack of drinking water. Designer A. Vittori solved this problem with the help of high technology. Its construction seems unusual giant sculpture, which can significantly improve the situation.

The size of the catchment tower in height of almost 30 feet, about 9 meters. Its main purpose is to provide local residents the right volume of drinking water. It is presented in the form of 25 gallons, which holds about 95 liters of water. The water itself is collected from a water vapor atmosphere.

The WarkaWater tower is composed of columns, each of which consists of several structures. The first structure includes a semi-rigid outer exoskeleton. It is derived from related branches of bamboo or rushes. The second structure is presented in the form of an internal plastic mesh. Polypropylene, and nylon fibers, are the drip pans for condensation. The condensed moisture flows in the form of droplets into a water tank that is located at the base of the tower. The designer paid special attention to the problem of lack of clean drinking water after he visited North-Eastern Ethiopia. It was there that he learned about the plight of the rural poor, who suffered greatly from lack of water.

In Ethiopia, people live in a rather beautiful natural surroundings, however, often suffer from lack of electricity, running water, and such basic things as toilet and shower. To survive, women and children have to walk a whole km to the ponds, which are filled with worms and human waste to collect water in dried pumpkin or broken plastic containers, then carrying the water back home through a dangerous road. This process takes a huge amount of time, putting the lives of women and children to the threat leads to serious diseases. Children, usually often off from school that is causing a repetitive cycle of poverty.

WarkaWater is designed to provide the population with clean water, ensuring long-term financial, environmental and social sustainability. The tower is easy to build for a week and it cost local residents about 550 $, using the available materials.
