Volkswagen sold its first ultra-efficient hybrid XL1

Last weekend, Volkswagen handed over the keys to the first production hybrid, the XL1, known primarily for spending less than 1 litre of diesel per 100km. The ceremony took place at the company’s factory in Dresden, where the model was created.

The XL1 batch will consist of only 100 copies. The lucky owner of the first XL1 was the director of the Berlin branch of McKinsey & Company Christian Maloney. He managed to test the XL1 last year: The XL1 has amazed me since I got behind the wheel and I’m thrilled to now have a car with such an incredible design and engine. Volkswagen has really created something new and unique, Maloney said.

With a consumption of 0.9 l/100 km, the XL1 is the most economical production car in the world. Carbon fiber bearing body weighs five times less than steel, while surpassing it in rigidity. Magnesium wheels, polycarbonate glass and carbon brakes also affected the weight of the hybrid, which is only 795 kg.

The lightweight and aerodynamic XL1 is controlled by a hybrid system consisting of a 7-speed DSG pair clutch gearbox, a 0.8-liter two-cylinder TDI with a capacity of 48 horsepower and a 20-kilowatt electric motor. The latter can independently move the car for 40-50 km, drawing energy from a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 5.5 kWh.

However, such a car will be affordable except for the top manager of a large company concerned about the problem of ecology. Maloney paid 110,000 euros for his XL1.
