Cinnamon —source of a chemical which helps to protect the brain
In a study on mice, a team of scientists from Rush University Medical center (Chicago) found that cinnamon can be useful for protecting the brain.
The researchers found: when entering a spice in the body, our liver turns it into sodium benzoate, a drug that is used in the treatment of nervous disorders. Watching the rodents, the researchers saw how the chemical enters the brain, stops the destruction of proteins that protect cells, neurons and improves motor function.
Professor Kalipada Pahan told: "Cinnamon widely used as spice throughout the world for centuries. It has the potential to be one of the safest approaches to halt disease progression in patients with Parkinson's disease". Another scientist added that Ceylon cinnamon is better because it is more pure. Now the researchers intend to test a new food medications on patients with the disease.
