Breakfast of recharging the phone

Canadian engineers have developed a piezoelectric chin strap, which uses energy from the movement of the lower jaw, turning it into electricity.

The device PFC, created by the efforts of researchers from Sonomax-ÉTS Industrial Research Chair in In-ear Technologies (Montreal) made from a smart piezoelectric material: the integrated electrodes on the adhesive polymer matrix. Movement of the lower jaw, for example during lunch time, produce a certain amount of energy.

In the tests, the volunteer was chewing gum for one minute, wearing the device on the head, and maximum energy yield was 18 milliwatts. One of the founders of Aidin Delnavaz: "Given that the average power available from chewing is around seven milliwatts, we have a long way to go before improving the device performance. The power level reached at the moment, hardly sufficient for powering electrical devices. However, we can increase output power by adding additional layers on the strap. The designers of the unusual products we hope that it will be used to power electronic devices such as hearing AIDS, cochlear implants, and even phones.
