Solar ice cream
The world’s largest ice cream manufacturer, Unilever, came up with the idea of creating refrigeration units at their ice cream sales points that would be completely non-volatile.
Tested samples of retail kiosks not only do not depend on the power grid - sellers can even recharge their cell phones from them. The impact on the environment is minimal.
The creation of environmentally-neutral freezers is part of the company’s sustainable living plan, which includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions from refrigeration plants.
As for the company itself, which has about 2 million retail outlets and, accordingly, no fewer freezers on them, it can become the first in its segment, so actively relying on the Sun.
Unilever had planned to purchase 850,000 solar freezers between 2010 and 2015, but they had already exceeded that plan. So far, 1.5 million refrigeration units have been purchased.
Modern refrigerators made from recycled materials reduce energy consumption to less than 0.5 kWh per day. This is comparable to working TV for 3 hours. In addition to reducing the burden on the grid, this initiative reduces the need for dry ice for retail outlets.
