6 movies that expand horizons and make you question reality
Some movies touch the heart, penetrate to the very depths of the soul and overwhelm the senses. They awaken in us the humanity and empathy. And other films relate to the mind to turn to the work of the cogs, awakening and expanding consciousness. It's a movie that raises the issue of acute and frightening, but the reason of the enlightenment, a new perspective on life and reality.
1. Waking life (waking Life) / Waking Life
What is dream and what is reality? Can we tell them apart? What is the nature of the dream? These are just a few topics from a wide range of questions posed by an animated drama by Richard Linklater. The main character wanders amongst scenes of dialogue, unnamed characters, and in some important episodes, he even absent. Here you will find a few familiar actors from other film Linklater (Ethan hawke and Julie Delpy from the popular romantic trilogy "Before sunrise / sunset / midnight").
Moving from the ethereal to the real, this film casts doubt on the validity of every aspect of existence, going straight into an existential crisis. He will fill your mind with philosophical questions, chief among them: and how real is my life anyway?
2. Samsara / Samsara
"Samsara" is a documentary, filmed in 2011 directed by Ron Fricke, who previously released two of the same style and philosophical themes of the film "Baraka" and "Chronos". Called Samsara in Sanskrit refers to the continuous cycle of life. Literally it means "continuous flow" and is used to describe the cycle of birth, death and rebirth, these themes and concepts are explored in the film. From the stunning visuals it is impossible to separate the music. Little blocks of visual narrative are interrelated in an intricate thread that tells about the most important.
3. Uncle Bunmi, who remembers his past life / Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
"Uncle boonmee who can recall", released in 2010, became the first Thai film that won the Palme d'or. The main character, uncle boonmee who can recall his dying from kidney disease. Living out the last days together with your loved ones in the ethereal in physical form – embarks on a journey to explore your own past lives.
This film was a continuation of another project of Apichatpong Weerasethakul called "Primitive" and mainly focused on a specific region of Thailand. But his previous works are more focused on the collective memory of the region in political and historical aspect, and "Uncle boonmee who can recall", according to the Director, similar to the "personal diary".
We are talking about the value of memory, transformation, reincarnation and the nature of things in the face of death. Very interesting, the measured film in the style of magical realism for all those interested in causal relationships, past lives, and of course, cinema.
4. Stay in my skin / Under the Skin
Fresh film Jonathan Glazer, released last year, in which Scarlett Johansson played perhaps the best role in his entire career.
Scarlett is an alien creature, whose name we never learn. She takes human form, begins to seduce men and lead them to him... If you continue to talk about the plot, it is possible to significantly deprive you of viewing experience.
"Stay in my skin" is staggering. Looking at the screen wide-eyed, trying to comprehend and interpret what they see. If the previous movies in this list, exploring the questions of life, death and reincarnations, in this tape we are dealing with human consciousness and personal experiences/feelings.
5. Enter the void / Enter the Void
This psychedelic melodrama gives the feeling of a continuous journey and not without reason. Gaspar noé used the bright neon lights and the most plausible perceived the first-person narrative (even the camera momentarily "blinks" when the main character closes his eyes).
The story continues after the death of the hero who leaves the body and now continues to move through time and space. The pace of the film increases. In the end, is the culmination of the plot and the sex scenes. However, the end turns into another plot twist, leaving us puzzled. Whether it was the afterlife, or just polished the theory that at death our consciousness is desperately trying to survive? New life cycle or flashback? Food for thought.
6. All the films of Andrei Tarkovsky
Everything. "Solaris", "Stalker", "Mirror" is a good start. And about the "Nostalgia" don't forget. Soviet cinema has always been special, but Tarkovsky is the culmination of thoughtfulness and reflexivity in the film industry. Childhood, dreams, memory, metaphysics and the illusory nature of the feature films of this Director. None of his work will not leave you the same after viewing.
In his works a lot of symbolism. Tarkovsky sought to create a form of cinema, which "sculpturesque time", changes our perceptions, and shows how relative our perception. It's not the easiest but once you immerse yourself in his work, the cinema of Tarkovsky will leave you mesmerized, puzzled and charm.published
