The number of fat cells remains constant human lifetime

The number of adipocytes formed in adolescence remains constant throughout life, despite significant fluctuations in body weight. This conclusion was obtained by surveying a few volunteers whose weight fluctuated widely in a short time.

Earlier, it was already known that by increasing the weight of a person due to fat, fat cells increase in size simply by accumulating in increasing amounts of fat. However, scientists did not know whether the amount of change of these cells. This would mean that in getting rid of excess weight a person loses fat cells.

In the process of the new study were first examined hundreds of children, adults and elderly people of different ages, in order to calculate changes in the number of fat cells. It turned out, however, that this number is only changed repeatedly in children during their growth, while in adults remains constant.

Then the team of scientists have suggested that the number of fat cells can be changed only in extreme circumstances by taking samples of adipose tissue in certain adults and subjecting them to various "executions" like gastric reduction surgery and others. After a course of treatment and weight loss samples were again taken and tested. It was found that the number of fat cells remains the same despite significant weight loss.

This may explain why it is so difficult to lose weight - your cells is not going away, and reluctant to give the accumulated fat. It would be nice if science could find a means to help to manipulate the number of fat cells, but yet effective are difficult classical technique - exercise and diet.
