In the mid-1950s the factory Uritsky initiated the creation of a new model trolley. The first independent development of the plant was the trolley TBU-1.



The first copy of TBU-1 came out of the factory gates in 1955. The trolleybus had an all-metal, polunesuschy body, weighed 9 tons. Traction motor DC-204 with capacity of 96 kW allows us to develop a full load speed of 65 km / h.



Drive pneumatic doors. 45 seats, total capacity - 90 people. A distinctive feature of the trolley from the subsequent production models was the placement of the traction motor in the rear overhang, and not in the database. In all there were 10 trolleybus TBU-1 (one - in the summer of 1955, one - in 1957, the rest - in early 1958). Eight of them have gone on trial in Moscow, two more (according to other sources - three) - in Leningrad.



In the first months of operation have been found serious design flaws: supercharged rear overhang and lack of rigidity of the body. As a result, the rear overhang TBU-1 began to sag, and there was a threat of destruction of the body. This was the reason for their rapid write-off in Moscow they had written off in 1961. Leningrad car suffered a similar fate. Leningrad TBU-1 during the overhaul remove the engine from the rear overhang and move it to the database. But not for long saved the situation, and the last TBU-1 was decommissioned in 1964. To this day survived only one TBU-1, which for 20 years is waiting for the restoration of the museum Mosgortrans.



In January 1959 the plant was built by an experienced trolley new model - ZiU-5. These machines are strongly reminiscent of TBU-1, but the new model have been eliminated almost all identified during testing TBU weaknesses. Thus, the motor (DC-207A, 95kW) moved into the base, and the power elements of the body have been significantly reworked.



Shop ZiU-5 is almost indistinguishable from the cabin of its predecessor. From TBU-1 ZiU-5 moved even hours, are on the partition between the cab and interior. However, due to the transfer to the database engine could allow an increase in the load on the rear overhang. In the same red color were painted ZiU-5, arrived in Bogota in 1967. These trolleybuses became the first Soviet trolleybuses who crossed the ocean. In total, the capital of Colombia, was delivered a hundred trolleybuses 1967 release.



During serial production ZiU-5 improved more than once. Pneumatic door was replaced by a mechanical, pneumatic parking brake was also replaced mechanical. In the mid-1960s trolley ZiU-5 received a reduced level of the rear platform. The only significant change in design was made in 1969, when it was started serial production ZiU-5D.
