Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev celebrated his 80th birthday at a gala at London's Royal Albert Hall.

The tone throughout the evening was set by the legendary German band Scorpions with the song “Wind of Change”, which personified in the West the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, in which Gorbachev played a key role.

Next to Mikhail Sergeyevich was always his daughter. Speaking to the guests of the evening, Gorbachev himself admitted that he expects to live to at least 90 years and feels happy. “I didn’t even think I’d live to be 80, and now I’m committing to live to be 90,” Gorbachev joked to the audience’s cheering laughter. He expressed the hope that, despite all the contradictions of his era, he was able to give people an understanding of the ideals of freedom.

As part of the holiday, outstanding figures of our time were awarded the first Gorbachev Prizes in three nominations - Perestroika, Acceleration and Glasnost. In the nomination “Perestroika” the prize was awarded to the creator of the World Wide Web Timothy Berners-Lee. The winner of the Acceleration Award was 25-year-old Kenyan Evans Wadongo, who develops alternative energy sources for African countries. In the third nomination - "Glasnost" - won the founder of CNN Ted Turner.
