How to Make a Self-Sustaining Fire

Sit in the evening by a pleasantly crackling fire you want in any, even the shortest tourist hike. Warm fire. It helps us prepare our food and keeps us warm on cold nights, but keeping it up all night is, frankly, not an easy task.

What if we told you that the next time you go camping, you don't have to climb out of your warm sleeping bag every time to plant firewood and keep the fire from going out?

"Site" It offers a life hack, thanks to which you can build a self-sustaining fire, capable of burning without the slightest human intervention from 10 to 14 hours. Sleeping near a fire has never been easier.

Countless generations of fishermen, hunters and travelers have invented a great variety of fires and ways to breed them, but enthusiasts continue to invent new designs to this day.

Thanks to former biology teacher and now survival instructor and outdoor enthusiast Bob Hensler, we can experience an unusual fire scheme that is easy to relax with while the fire takes care of itself.

The design can seem quite complicated, and it may take a couple of extra hands to accommodate the large logs that will power the fire, but if the method is really effective, then it’s worth it.

The Nodya bonfire Since we are talking about long-lasting fires, it is impossible not to mention and node-fireThe main feature of which is a long burning. This fire does not require frequent tossing of firewood, burns all night and, provided it is properly arranged, almost does not require supervision.

There are at least two main options for such a fire. In the classic (vertical) “nodier”, the fire burns between the logs along their entire length, providing heat to the person lying opposite.

For a vertical "nodya" harvest two flat logs without knots. Their thickness should be at least 25 cm, and the length, as a rule, is determined by the height of a person: in this case, the combustion will be enough for a full sleep.

On prepared decks, bark is removed in places where the logs will face each other. Next, you need to place one log on top of the other.

It is easier to do this by driving into the ground at the edges of the stake logs. A more time-consuming method involves cutting out the cliffs so that in the working position (when the logs lie cliffed to each other) the upper log does not roll off the lower one.

The classic “node” is quite capricious, requires the mandatory presence of tools (axe and saw) and gives relatively little heat, but it burns longer than other types of bonfires.

Lazy "node" is made of three logs, two of which lie on the ground adjacent to each other, and the third is located parallel to the first two in the groove formed between them. This option is more unpretentious, but requires the correct selection of logs and place them relative to each other.

In order for the fire to burn for a long time, the upper log must be selected with sufficient thickness, since it will burn in the first place. For a full night, the thickness should be at least 30 cm.

The level of heat transfer "nodya" is regulated by the size of the gap. Optimal - 5-6 cm. But in the process of burning, logs can burn unevenly, and the gap profile will constantly change, which can lead to the attenuation of the fire.

In 2018, more than 10 thousand forest fires were registered in Russia. Therefore, the breeding of all types of fires requires strict compliance with a number of fire safety rules.

  1. In summer, when the danger of forest fires increases, it is necessary to remove dry grass, leaves, spruce needles and other combustible materials to a safe distance from the fire.
  2. Around the fire it is necessary to dig a small ditch or pour sand so that the fire does not spread to the surrounding vegetation.
  3. Between the fire and the place to sleep should drive a few pegs They will protect the sleeping person from accidentally rolled down a burning log.

And in conclusion, “The Fire” is a song-reflection, in which Andrei Makarevich sings about how differently you can dispose of the reserve of fire in your life.
