How to learn to admit your mistakes

Mistakes are an integral part of our lives. Some people easily understand and learn from them, and some prefer to avoid them, but they do everything. As they say, “Only those who do nothing make mistakes.”

It so happened that other people’s mistakes are much easier to notice than your own. This is especially true for the elderly. Have you noticed that people become more intolerant and harmful with age? Surely you had to deal with grumpy pensioners, who only to teach the mind-mind “unbearable youth”.

It’s hard to argue with the fact that older people are more likely to talk about other people’s mistakes than their own. Turns out it's not just happening. Editorial "Site" I found out why older people tend to ignore their own mistakes and direct their attention to the study of strangers.

Neuroscientists at the University of Iowa conducted an experiment, during which it turned out that the recognition and mistake People over the age of 60 have more difficulties than young people. In addition, older people are less likely to doubt the correctness of their actions than young people.

Scientists have developed a special test aimed at assessing the ability of older people to admit their mistakes.

The test was conducted with 77 volunteers. The volunteers were divided into two groups: the first group consisted of 38 people, whose average age was 22 years, the second of 39 people, whose age was 68 years.

The results of the test showed that the participants of the first group recognized the mistakes made by them in 75% of cases, while the representatives of the second group only in 63% of cases. At the same time, scientists noted that the elderly were absolutely sincerely convinced of their rightness.

In addition to the test itself, the researchers observed changes in the subjects’ behavior while admitting their mistakes. They were able to notice some pattern. At the time of admitting their own mistakes, the pupils significantly dilated, and in representatives of the older age category, when errors were detected, the pupils did not change their size.

So far, it has not been possible to find out exactly what changes in the autonomic nervous system affect the deterioration of the ability of older people to notice their mistakes. However, in the future, scientists plan to conduct additional experiments to determine this.

Young people often react negatively to criticism from older people and do not understand that in fact, pointing out mistakes, they do not want to annoy, but on the contrary, want to help.

Sometimes we just don’t know how to deal with other people who notice our mistakes, and more often than not, we start to defend ourselves against attacks by resorting to judgment. However, this is extremely wrong. One should not judge others for their imperfections, on the contrary, one should learn to tolerate each other and help correct mistakes made.
