Memories of typical Soviet apartments on the example of the film “The Irony of Fate”

Today, the Soviet interior causes us difficult feelings. Polished sideboards, holdouts, massive floor lamps, carpets on the walls of some people annoy, and others give the opportunity to ponostalgia.

Anyway, and this is a large part of our past, the real encyclopedia of which can be considered cinema. Today we will talk about the peculiarities of Soviet everyday life on the example of the film “Irony of Fate, or With a Light Steam” beloved by millions!

We all remember that Zhenya Lukashin confused a model house in Moscow on the 3rd Street of Builders with his twin in Leningrad.

In reality, both houses, the entrances of which we see in the main New Year film, are located in the Moscow district of Troparevo-Nikulino, on Vernadsky Avenue. Nadia's house is number 113 and Zhenya's house is 125.

Decorations of both Moscow and Leningrad apartments were created in the pavilion of the Mosfilm film studio. Is this a stereotypical place at the time? Yes and no. On the one hand, many Soviet people then had the same or similar pieces of furniture.

On the other hand, the area, albeit not the most ordinary two-room apartment by the efforts of decorators has grown from 32 to a completely fantastic 120 square meters. Why did the filmmakers need this? There was such a tradition - a little embellishment of life. And the depth of the frame from this only benefited.

Both Lukashin and Nadia recently celebrated a housewarming. This plot move justifies the mess in the apartments and partly explains the confusion. And in addition, gives the filmmakers the opportunity to simply move furniture to turn Zhenina apartment in Nadina and vice versa.

Notable furniture, by the way, furniture. In both apartments we see quite unusual at the time chairs with red upholstery. The soft back and smooth lines of the frame make them unlike typical products of Soviet factories. Meticulous viewers determined that this is part of the furniture set “Medeo” from the Polish factory “Varta-Swazhendz”.

In addition to chairs, it included a wardrobe for clothes, a table, a bed on which Lukashin rested in Nadina’s apartment, a sofa, a chest of drawers and a sideboard with a secretary.

In general, Nadina's apartment in the film, in my opinion, looks quite controversial. It looks like recognizable furniture. And a mysterious window from the bathroom to the kitchen on the spot. And a rather poorly furnished kitchen. And on the other hand, the details are not typical for the apartment of a simple teacher: an antique mirror in the hallway, expensive Polish furniture, the walls are painted in a designer dark green color.

Did you have any home furnishings from your home? Today, they can already be considered rare. For example, for the multimedia exhibition “Invasive Ryazanov”, where they tried to recreate scenes from the film, the original furniture apparently never found.
