After three years in Japan, there will be convoys of trucks without drivers

The government of Japan has elaborated a programme, according to which in 2020 on country roads will appear convoys of driverless trucks.

The formation of convoys of Autonomous trucks that support wireless communication with the leading vehicle for timely accelerating or braking to maintain a necessary distance between the trucks is called "platooning" (the caravan).

It is hoped that this technology will enable the logistics sector of Japan to cope with chronic shortages of truck drivers. The number of traffic jams often occur because of the time difference of deceleration and rate of speed reduction when driving in hilly terrain, too, can be reduced to a minimum.

The government plans to use the convoys of Autonomous trucks for transportation of goods on Expressway Shin-Tomei Expressway, which runs part of the way from Tokyo to Nagoya, one of the largest ports in Japan. This is supposed to create lanes with interchanges and areas for Parking and recreation.

Isuzu Motors and Hino Motors have jointly develop an intelligent transport system required to move the caravan from the Autonomous trucks. The first test convoys of driverless trucks will be held in Japan in 2018.

In turn, the German automotive company Daimler is working on its own system for convoys of Autonomous trucks, which plans to introduce in 2025. published
