Chapel on a volcanic hill

In the Central part of France is the small town of Le-Puy-EN-Valais (Le Puy-en-Velay), known worldwide not only for its cheeses, and unusual buildings, for example, the chapel of St. Michael, situated on a cliff.

Vladimir Nabokov has a wonderful aphorism that do not come to God, guided tours and single travelers. It seems that the chapel of St. Michael in the ancient town of Le Puy-EN-Velay in France just created for single pilgrims. It towers over the city at 280 feet, as it is built on a basalt rock. To the entrance are 268 stone steps, and the summit offers a scenic view of the surrounding area.

The city itself is located in the province of Auvergne, known territory with volcanic past. Therefore, the town as if hidden among the ruins of the volcano. But the most remarkable place in Le Puy-EN-Valais, is the chapel of St. Michael, which in 962, the year it was built under the management of St. James, at that time Bishop of the city. The chapel is located at the altitude of 82 meters and it seems that literally grows out of volcanic stone. Before entering the chapel you have to overcome 268 steps.

Since 1998, the year the temple springs in the world heritage list of UNESCO.
