Global warming and how bananas will replace kartofel

Climate change can cause the most important source of food for millions of people will become the culture of the banana family. The last report, experts warn of the Consultative group on international agricultural research (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, CGIAR).

Researchers from the CGIAR called fruits, which in some developing countries will replace the potatoes. Manioc and some less well known with increasing temperature have the potential to become the most important food crops. People will be forced to adapt to the new menu.

Experts argue that the production of the most important (from the point of view of caloric content) of the earth "breadwinners" — corn, rice and wheat in many developing countries will be reduced. As temperatures rise, the same fate will befall and potatoes, feel more comfortable in a cool climate.

One of the authors of the report Dr Philip Thornton (Philip Thornton) believes that although bananas and plantayn (banana Paradise), is also influenced by the constraints in certain regions, they will be able to effectively replace the potatoes: "This is not necessarily a panacea, but where will increase the temperature, the bananas can be one of the options that we must consider."

Wheat named in the report the most important nutritious source of vegetable protein. But wheat is waiting for a difficult future in the developing world. High prices for cotton, corn and soybeans displace it on barren land, which further exacerbates the situation caused by climate change.

Manioc (its other names cassava, manioc, Yucca) is less affected by temperature, so it can be considered as one of the options in South Asia. However, how easy will it be for people to adjust to a new culture and a new diet?

According to Bruce Campbell (Bruce Campbell), program Director of the Research group on climate change, agriculture and food security (Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security research group, CCAFS), people have faced similar changes in the past: "Two decades ago, almost no rice was used in some parts of Africa, people now have started eating it because of the price. It has become more accessible and easier to cook. I think that such shifts happen all the time, and I think that they will remain in the future."

One of the main problems of changes in diet, researchers believe the necessity of maintaining in it a sufficient proportion of vegetable proteins. Their common source is soybeans, but they are very sensitive to temperature changes.

Scientists believe that black-eyed peas (or some), known in Africa as the "meat of the poor" may be a reasonable alternative to soy, because the plant prefers hot weather and is resistant to drought. An additional advantage of this culture – its stems are suitable for animal feed. For the cultivation of cow peas in some countries, including in Niger and in Nigeria, farmers are now gradually moving away from cotton production.

The likely changes in consumption of animal proteins. Most of the people will get by increasing the number of small cattle. According to Dr. Campbell, this process has already started in southern Africa farmers see the problem and switch from cattle to goats.
