Use your smartphone to predict earthquakes

Italian scientists have made a proposal to collect data on earthquakes using the built-in phone accelerometers. This will give the opportunity to organize a database of information about the nature and frequency of weak shocks. As they say seismologists, the new method helps to understand how to operate the bowels of the Earth.

According to experts, the accelerometer can capture even the weak shocks. During the experiment, they bought the iPhone, was pulled from the chip and connecting to the computer, compared the sensitivity of the sensor with professional seismological instruments. It turned out that the phone accelerometer will be enough to fix weak aftershocks with magnitude five and larger.

This will give the ability to use phones as nodes in global mobile seismicity", which will collect data on the seismic condition in cities in real time. According to seismologists, the accuracy of the accelerometers in the near future will also be higher, which will give the opportunity to watch even for the weakest shocks.
