The international court banned Japan catch whales

Japan should stop the catching and killing whales, said today the international court in the Hague. The UN court ordered Japan to revoke existing permits to kill whales for scientific purposes and to stop granting such permits in the future. The decision is a victory for Australia, which has filed legal proceedings against the whaling industry of Japan in 2010, claiming it had violated international obligations. In 1982 the international whaling Commission adopted a moratorium on commercial whaling, allowing the catching and killing of whales only for scientific purposes. Scientific catch limits are set each country on an annual basis.

Opponents of catch said that the study of the Japanese side is a Fig leaf for commercial hunting. Japan objected that the sale of whale meat is not beneficial, and that it needs to catch and kill whales to study animals and their potential as a food source. Twelve votes to four, the court held that Japan had violated a number of obligations in accordance with the schedule of the International Convention for the regulation of whaling. The decision is binding and not appealable.
