Created the first floating nuclear power station

MIT presented the project of a nuclear power plant, which can't hurt the earthquake and tsunami. Similar in design to the platform currently used for offshore drilling of oil. Floating power plant will use water to cool the reactors in order to minimize the possibility of overheating and potential collapse. In the case of decommissioning, design can be towed to shore.

The principle of operation is completely analogous to terrestrial nuclear power, but new floating power plants can range in size from small 50-megawatt station with capacity of 1000 MW. Overheating of the reactor and a potential crisis similar to that which occurred in Chernobyl and Fukushima would be virtually impossible at sea — says Jacopo Bongiorno, Professor Massachusetts Institute of technology.

This type of construction of NPPs is not unique. Russia is already developing the world's first floating nuclear power station "Academician Lomonosov". But Bongiorno says that their project will be located farther from shore, just to minimize the threat of tsunamis. Development will be particularly relevant for Asia, where seismic activity and destructive waves are not uncommon.
