Scientists when the teacher talks too much, children learn worse
A significant part of students "failed" the exams due to the fact that the teachers they lecture. Such a paradoxical conclusion was made by American scientists, analyzing the learning outcomes of young people. A third of all those who passed exams, receives a negative evaluation. But the reason is not in bad faith or lack of diligence in students. The quality of knowledge is affected by the principle of supply and assimilation of the material.
The reason for the bad ratings in the passive perception of information on the lessons
The fact that lectures are to blame for poor student performance, scientists have found after comparing this work with the so-called "active learning". The difference is in the behavior and participation of students in the learning process. And if during the traditional lesson the kids just heed to what their teacher says, "active learning" involves discussions, debates and live the solution of problems on this very topic.
"In the course number of 100 students, 34 people "fail" in exams, if they passed only lecture training. If the students got knowledge according to the principle of active learning, a negative result would be significantly lower – at 22 people," explains Scott Freeman of the University of Washington.
Active discussion is better
"Ask, not tell" — the principle of elected team of scientists from the University of Washington in order to prove the effectiveness of active learning. The students received the same amount of information and answered exactly the same exam questions. But one group derived knowledge purely from lectures, that is, perceive information at the hearing without further analysis and discussion. And the other, listening to a specific topic discussed, analysed it and made some conclusions.
Confirmation of the effectiveness of active learning has become improved statistics on the results of the annual examinations. Thus, the success rate increased by 6%, while many of the participants of the experiment improved their final grades.
Instead of telling the topic of the lesson, the teacher encourages the children to read it independently
"We need to stop killing the children's imagination and interest in science monotonous lectures," urges the Freeman. - "It is better to give them the opportunity to think like scientists." His beliefs Dr. Freeman illustrated his own approach to the learning process. Instead of telling the topic of the lesson, it encourages them to read it independently.
But on the lesson the teacher arranges a discussion or a poll. Understanding that at any time you can get question from the teacher, forcing students to always be "on guard" and the main thing – to find your own answer to these questions, generate their own ideas and to actively support the discussion. The consequence of this way of learning is not only to increase the final grade. The main goal of active learning is to teach children to think, to imagine, to build and to prove their theory.
