American researchers have developed a new approach for the disinfection of wounds from burns. New technology that is now used for disinfection products, can help solve complex medical problems: the destruction of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and antimicrobial drugs.
Researchers at Massachusetts General hospital have successfully used high-voltage microsecond pulsed fields against resistant bacteria, in mice with burns. Thus bacterial level dropped to 10,000 times. Dr. Alexander Golberg says: "the Use of pulsed electric fields has the advantages when exposed to many types of bacteria and the penetration of the full thickness wounds. This can lead to the emergence of entirely new means of disinfection of burns without the use of antibiotics can increase bacterial resistance."
Pulsed electric fields are used for many decades to preserve food by destroying bacteria; and more recently they have been used for the treatment of tumors.
