Dr. Elliot Aronson has long studied the effect that produces the awkwardness of the relationship to the person and discovered the phenomenon that is called "oversight effect". In fact, this effect stems from the fact that most of us already know: the ideal people produce a frightening impression.

During one experiment, participants watched a series of interviews of the candidates to participate in a quiz show. Some of them were almost perfect – answered most questions correctly and their stories about themselves is also impressive. Others are pretty mediocre: only about 30 percent of their answers were correct, and big achievements in life, they boast, too, could not.

In the middle of each interview, the participants answered whether they find one or another candidate sufficiently knowledgeable and attractive. Is hardly surprising that most of the "almost flawless" received from the participants the most. Then they watched the second part of the interview, and here happened something unexpected.

The applicant did any clumsy gesture, overturned on itself a Cup of coffee and began haltingly to apologize. After that, Aronson again asked participants about how they liked the applicant.

And then it became clear how unfair the world is...

"Almost perfect", which after the first part gave the participants a little sympathy, now seemed much more attractive. But "mediocre" from this focus, they only lose points.

So, before you decide to use "mistakes" in their favor, try to get an honest answer to the question "what he/she already thinks about you".
