Physical activity very positive

According to a new study at Queen's University, regular exercise will help to see the world in a more positive light.

The researchers decided to examine the relationship between threat perception and exercise and concluded that physical activity improves self-esteem of the people, reduces anxiety. In the experiment, 66 students ran, stood, or walked. Then participants were asked to watch an animation in which a human figure was perceived as receding and approaching at the same time. It turned out that those students who walked or ran, saw the image in the form of the expiring man. That is seen less threatening situation.

According to psychologists, these data suggest that physical activity reduces anxiety, promotes a positive perception of the environment. Dr. Adam Heenan said: "After a workout, you see the world less threatening. Heenan is confident that these findings may have implications for people who suffer from anxiety.

The approaching silhouette is perceived as a potential threat, especially for socially anxious people, Heenan added. "Exercise has long been known as a good method of anxiety, and we have shown another potential advantage."
