Terrible photo report - cells for the mentally ill on the island of Bali

In Indonesia, an estimated 26,000 people with mental disorders live in pasungs. These are peculiar cells with cages and shackles, in which the mentally ill are placed by relatives who are unable to pay for treatment in a psychiatric hospital.

More than three million tourists visit Bali each year, but few know the dark side of the island.

69-year-old psychiatrist Lou Ketut Suriani set a goal to free all the guests of the Passungs.

“We hope that they will be given the right treatment and end discrimination against people with mental illness who have the same rights and the same guarantees from the government as ordinary citizens,” she said, noting that no one should live in poverty and chains just because they are mentally ill.
