Self-driving cars in the UK

From January next year, unmanned vehicles may be introduced in three cities. The Minister for Business, Innovation and Vocational Education, Vince Cable, has announced a £10 million competition for municipalities looking to host one of the projects.

The government wants the projects to be drawn up in close collaboration with business and research firms. The testing phase in individual cities will range from 18 to 36 months. Applications will be accepted until October 1, 2014.

With today’s decision, we will see driverless cars, this new technology, on the streets of our cities in less than six months, opening up new opportunities for our economy and our society, said Vince Cable, Minister for Business, Innovation and Vocational Education.

Automated cars are expected to help solve the problem of traffic jams, reduce accidents on roads, and show lower emissions, including CO2.

The Ministry of Transport will also be involved in financing the project. In addition, it is planned to make changes to the rules of the road, taking into account fully autonomous cars and those where a qualified driver can take over manual control.
