Experts assess potential of Georgia in hydropower sector

The strategy of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), developed for Georgia, assessed the country's potential in the field of hydropower. As it turned out, it is one of the tallest in the world.

Georgia has the potential to produce 7.3 MW of electricity per capita in renewable energy. This even exceeds the capacity of Canada and Nigeria, which have significant water resources.

The EBRD finances the construction and reconstruction of a number of hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in Georgia, the construction of high-voltage transmission lines for electricity exports.

In terms of hydroelectric power generation, Georgia is of particular importance. This is due to the geographical location of the country. In Georgia, electricity consumption is not very high, therefore, it is possible to export most of it to Turkey. The EBRD has developed a strategy that will help Georgia’s hydropower plants increase electricity production, said Ricardo Puliti, EBRD Managing Director for Energy and Natural Resources.
