Google will test self-driving cars in the Matrix
Recently, Google introduced its self-driving car, which has no controls. However, due to the rules, which go into effect on September 16, there is no way to test it on California roads. In accordance with the rules, the car must have a steering wheel and brake and gas pedal, so that, if necessary, the driver can take control of the control.
However, according to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. government is developing rules for testing driverless cars without controls on public roads.
Google said it plans to comply with California regulations by adding a small temporary steering wheel and pedals that drivers will be able to use during testing.
Google could fully test a prototype driverless car on private roads or try to test the car on public roads outside California next month. But such tests will not take into account all the road situations in which the driver may find himself.
So Google has developed something like the Matrix, a virtual version of California’s road system, where it can test the car in different situations before testing it on a real road. Earlier this year, she filed a petition with the government to use the virtual system to test cars instead of actual tests on the roads.
“Computer simulations are actually valuable because they allow manufacturers to test their software for much larger conditions and situations than they could be on the test track,” said Ron Medford, Google’s director of security.
The simulation shows the completeness of California’s road system and is used to drive a Google car over 4 million miles. At the time, Google’s previously self-driving cars (not just those little ones without a steering wheel and pedals) traveled more than 1,000,000 kilometers.
When Google first unveiled its self-driving car earlier this year, it didn't include any of the traditional controls a driver might need. It was a bold move to show the public what the driving process will look like in the future.
