For oil and gas companies will be the first environmental rating

At the initiative of WWF Russia, the National Rating Agency and Creon Energy Consulting Group are preparing a document – the first rating of environmental responsibility of oil and gas companies in Russia.

The document will appear in December 2014 as part of the Common Sense program, conducted in support of the green economy. Its necessity is dictated by the realities – at present there is no single tool that allows obtaining objective and up-to-date information about the level of environmental responsibility of oil and gas companies and the scale of the impact of their activities on the environment. Ecorating should become a benchmark for the industry and the general public.

In the summer of 2014, the organizers discussed the draft methodology with independent experts and environmentalists from Gazprom, Surgutneftegaz, Sakhalin Energy, Yamal LNG and NOVATEK. As a result of discussions, an insufficiently universal criterion of the oil recovery coefficient, which depends on regional geological conditions, was eliminated from the draft methodology. At the same time, the criterion of the share of energy production from renewable energy sources, which oil and gas companies tried to avoid, has been preserved, since Russian companies are characterized by a strong lag in this indicator. From September 1, the National Rating Agency (NRA) will begin collecting primary information in accordance with the rating criteria.

The rating of environmental responsibility of oil and gas companies is a continuation of the NRA activity related to the implementation of socially significant projects. I am sure that the results of the rating will be of great interest not only for oil and gas companies, but also for state regulators and members of the public, said Viktor Chetverikov, General Director of the NRA.
