Sleeping on the skin of animals reduces the risk of asthma and allergies in children

German scientists urge parents to put babies to sleep on animal skins. They presented the arguments in favor of this statement and the results of their research at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society, which was recently held in Munich.
Researchers at the Helmholtz Research Center in Munich found that children who sleep on natural animal skins during the first three months of their lives are much less likely to develop allergies and asthma. The study showed that babies who often lay on natural skin in the first three months after birth, the risk of developing asthma decreased by almost 80% by the age of 6 years. By the age of ten, the risk of developing the disease was at least 41%. These indicators are associated with the presence in the skins of animals microbes that help strengthen the immune system of the child and protect against allergies and asthma. According to the authors of the study, their work supports the “hygienic hypothesis”, according to which modern society has become too obsessed with cleanliness: people do not come into contact with some of the most important microbes that contribute to the smooth functioning of the immune system.
