Flying wind turbines will be twice as efficient as ground

Google will launch a new pilot project in 2015. It consists in testing an innovative "flying wind farms".

To test a flying wind turbines will be on one of the Islands of the Hawaiian group. Head of Google X Alden Woodrow, visited the island in October to meet with members of the local community and Hawaiian entrepreneurs. Woodrow discussed the launch of a pilot project in the southern region of Waimea.

Innovative "flying wind power" previously stated the sales Director of the British branch of Google, Peter Fitzgerald of Illinois. The new development will reduce the cost of electricity and the demand for land required for terrestrial power plants.

Note that a project funded by Google, was developed by startup Makani Power. The company believes that the launch of power plants in the air like a kite will significantly reduce spending on electricity. At the same time and power will be more since the wind at high altitude much stronger. According to preliminary calculations, the "flying wind turbine" developed by the company, will be approximately twice as efficient as ground.

However, the project yet there are also disadvantages, which are currently not resolved. So, lightening leads to the conclusion of the turbines down, and too strong wind will cause the turbine can fall into a flat spin and break.
