Wind turbines built into the bridge

Wind turbines may be commonplace around the world, but their usual location – in open fields or on high mountain ranges – may not always be the most practical option.

Some scientists have had the idea of putting wind turbines under bridges, but would that be a viable alternative? According to a new study from Europe, yes.

The study is based on models and computer simulations conducted by researcher Oscar Soto and colleagues at Kingston University, London.

Researchers from Spain and the UK used a viaduct in the Canary Islands as the basis for a computer model designed to determine whether enough wind is created between poles on bridges to move turbine blades and generate power.

The best way to generate electricity is to use two different turbine sizes, or even create a matrix of 24 small turbines because of their light weight and the amount of power each device can produce.

In terms of practicality, however, the study suggests that the best option would be to use two identical 0.25 MW medium turbines, which could theoretically generate enough energy to power 450-500 homes, while also reducing CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuel sources.

“This type of installation will avoid emissions of 140 tons of CO2 per year, the combined effect of air purification, which gives about 7200 trees,” says researcher Oscar Soto.

P.S. And remember, just by changing your consciousness – together we change the world!
