Transplantation returned to a paralyzed patient the ability to walk

Recently to restore mobility of the limbs, scientists are developing different types of biological prosthetic valve replacement. However, another way to restore mobility to the person who took advantage of scientists from Poland and England, may be transplantation of cells in a paralyzed limb.

Patient Derek Fidyka paralyzed from the chest since 2010. For many years doctors have tried to restore full operation of a patient's body, but all attempts almost brought results. Now, thanks to a new method of treatment, Derek partially regained movement in his legs, as well as the functioning of some organs.

The procedure was to transplant cells from the olfactory bulb located in the nose, to the part of the spinal cord that was damaged. In the end, it was transplanted to 500 thousand cells that scientists took 100 microinjections.

"I believe that we have opened a new safe method of treating spinal cord injuries, which can lift patients from wheelchairs," says one of the researchers.

Of course, the whole process of patient's recovery takes a long time, according to the resource Gizmag. Six months later, Derek was able to make his first steps, and it will take a lot of time when he will be almost full to move.

However, despite this, the method of transplanting cells in the spinal cord can really help a lot of patients around the world.
