Unmanned vehicles can be hacked, experts warn

Selling on Amazon is easy to find hacking gadgets created for pentesting and breaking into cars. For example, this device reads the service codes, car OBD-II, and displays their values. This is only the beginning. Security professionals believe that security systems of cars not designed for protection against hacker attacks with the use of modern technology.

Few days ago Institute of engineering and technology UK (IET) made preduprejdenie that hacker attacks are one of the main problems for security of unmanned and semi-Autonomous vehicles, the development of which is now invested large sums of money, and the pilot projects launched in several countries around the world.

"Software systems must become more reliable before the public and the state will gain confidence in the safe use of computer-driven cars," — said the expert IET's Hugh Boyes (Hugh Boyes) at the presentation of the IET report on the future of Autonomous cars.

According to this report, 98% of all tested software applications have serious defects, some 10 to 15. Although manufacturers like to draw attention to the problem, but that is clearly not included in the list of their main priorities.

"If the hacker community will begin to study these cars, it is possible to provide a significant level of chaos," said Hugh Boyce. — If at least 1 of 100 cars or 1 out of 1000 will be hacked and start to behave inappropriately, you can expect chaos on the roads. That's why the cybersecurity of cars will be critically important."

Today software systems are working, for the most part, as "black boxes". Hugh Boyce believes that it should be to examine and test software code for errors. The same opinion, by the way, the electronic frontier Foundation, which recently urged the government to bring modification to the firmware of the vehicle from the effect of laws on copyright.
