How to Stop Worrying Before a Public Speaking

Public speaking may not go according to plan. Defending a thesis or covering issues of a scientific report due to excessive excitement will be spoiled.

You can cope with fear and self-doubt, for this there are many quite effective techniques.

As you begin to combat the fear of public speaking, remember that there is nothing reprehensible about it. Many people experience the same fear, which consists of many small fears: fear of poor performance evaluation, fear of looking bad in the eyes of others, worry about the possible loss of the thread of the narrative, etc. These disturbances, as a rule, are groundless, but they exist, and there is nothing wrong with this, you just need to try to minimize them.

Don't dwell on yourself.

One of the most effective ways to eliminate fear of public speaking is to defocus attention on your own person. Focus on your audience, look at the people gathered, answer the questions: who are these people? Why are they here? What do they want to hear from you? What's important to them? Focus on the interests of others and you will not have time to evaluate the strength of tremors in the knees.

Neutralize the excitement before the performance will help you and the awareness of your well-preparedness. Repeat the following phrases aloud or mentally: “I know everything.” I prepared very carefully for the report. I have no objective reason to worry.” The content of these phrases can be changed depending on the specific situation, the most important thing is your attitude.

To make everything go well, train, rehearse your speech in the circle of relatives and acquaintances or in front of a mirror. If there is such an opportunity, get used to the place of the performance: walk through the audience (stage, hall) in which your performance will be held, determine your trajectory of movements in advance (if necessary).

Instill in yourself the idea that your listeners are exactly the same people as you, they will be happy with your success. Treat the audience as loyal fans, none of them are hostile to you. Do not overthink yourself, watch your fears-thoughts as if from the outside, try to understand where they come from. Remember that these are not your fears, they come from outside. Let them move on, leaving you alone with your positive emotions. If you are aware of your fears, they will lose power over you.

Do not create negative scenarios, solve problems as they come. Programming for negative events will bring you nothing but excitement and frustration.

If a panic attack has seized you right during the performance, breathing exercises can help you out. Take a deep calm breath and the same exhale, feel how tense and relaxed the abdominal muscles. Breathe this way throughout the performance, it will help to find peace of mind. The technique of such breathing can be rehearsed long before the speech.

Always remember that your excitement, like everything in this world, is temporary and will end as soon as your performance passes.

P.S. And remember, just by changing your consciousness – together we change the world!
