5 myths about life that is taught in the universities
Let's be honest: apart from a few good friends, a number of interesting acquaintances, student parties, and the ability to make a crib and take notes of the domestic system of education gives nothing. You spend in the University 4-5-6 years and come out of there with a diploma in one hand and a bag of illusions and exaggerated expectations in the other.
Lucky if you have at the end already a year or two, as is work (otherwise you'll be faced with unrealistically high competition in the labour market and the inability to get a job in a decent place, unless you go to conquer the cities or the capital of their / another country).
And teachers of our universities usually "hammered" into the heads of students a lot of theory, 90% of it never will be applied and "supply" their 5 harmful mythsthat have nothing to do with reality.
1. The best students achieve the best results: this myth is more or less, while we are talking about grades in your record book. Behind the walls of universities, he means nothing. You know, where were 4 of the 5 best students of our course in a year or two after release of master? That's right — no work. Of those 5 people only 1 (if I'm not mistaken) is now working in the specialty. No correlation between the "fives" (or "100 points", as was the case with our school) and success in life outside the "Alma mater" does not exist. There is only the relationship between persistence and the ability to use for myself even disadvantageous situation and life circumstances — but not between life and your "record book.
2. The longer a person works, the greater the experience and competence: this myth is built the whole bureaucratic system in the CIS countries almost the whole system of our education. Wherever you go, everywhere you will face "aunt for 40-50, which is not the first five years, and sits in the chair, not knowing how in 2013 year to use a computer, but is considered a "valuable employee" or "experienced educator" because already 15-20 years working here. At the same time, I (and I think you too) there are at least a dozen friends and acquaintances who in their 20-25-28 years have the skills, knowledge and ideas, 5 times larger than this "aunt" in her 60 (and many of them had worked for 5 years in several large companies, agencies and startups, having the experience and knowledge that in my 15 years of "sitting" in the chair will not receive any "experienced" officer and the teacher-theorist). You still want to learn knowledge from people who are 10 years of procrastinate the same textbook?
3. All skills can be assessed and measured: the myth, perfectly working at the University, where all the "deserts" you can put grades in the grade book. And then "graduate" have to teach 2 years of real (not theoretical) accounting. Skills in areas such as design, interface design, copywriting, online marketing in General is hard to measure (because no serious domestic University is not preparing web designers or copywriters, and the man with two projects in the portfolio over 5 years of work not identical skills to those who have for 2 years — 25 projects).
4. There are recognized authorities, and this should be accepted: the favorite dogma of teachers and the rulers of the "old school." This myth extends its roots back in the days when "the party was more visible" and the works of economists and politicians 80 years ago served as an irrefutable source of theory and practice for all kinds of activities: from science and medicine to art and literature. Now in any field (except that theoretical and quantum physics) revision of "dogma" and concepts, occurs on average every 4-5 years. Head on his shoulders and the ability to analyze and research is much more important than the indomitable faith in the fact that "everything said is cast in granite".
5. You need to follow the rules: if this myth were true, then no Steve jobs, bill gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Bob Dylan, the Klitschko brothers and tiger woods would not be. The absence of rules does not mean that we should cross the street at a red light, eat with your hands instead of fork and knife and swear in public areas. The lack of rules means that there is no universal recipe or the usual life of the scheme, which must be followed for all around were happy, and you "fit" in the scheme of "kindergarten-school-Institute-work-marriage-children-house in mortgage-grandchildren-retirement-retirement-death." In fact, education in high school, we receive not to follow the rules, and to increase their knowledge in a particular niche and create something new that goes against the old scheme of commodity-money, socio-cultural and technological relations in society. That's only in Russian universities for some reason, this thing forgotten.
I am sure almost 100% that you have your own "myths" that you can add to this list. Do not hesitate: the sooner you know, after leaving the University, what has deceived you, the easier it is to say goodbye to illusions and achieve real and not theoretical success.published
