Ultrasonic drying rack saves up to 70% energy
Washing and drying of Laundry is not such an interesting topic, as the scientific achievements in the field of energy storage or renewable energy, but these processes take a lot of time, and with it a significant proportion of the family budget.
Modern technology of drying clothes, which uses produced with electricity heat to evaporate water from the clothes have been in need of modification. There are ways to reduce the amount of water in clothes before drying, for example, high-speed centrifuge.
The new solution proposed by Scientists from Oak Ridge National laboratory, with support from the U.S. Department of energy and GE Appliances, which has developed a prototype of innovative technology for drying clothes. It can reduce the time of drying up to 20 minutes, and reduce the amount of energy used for each load by 70%.
Instead of using high temperatures to remove water from clothes, this prototype uses high-frequency vibrations, ultrasonic waves are produced using piezoelectric transducers powered by a custom amplifier.
"This method of drying gives stunning results," said the scientist's lab IOB Momen (Ayyoub Momen), who developed the prototype.
"We were able to dry the piece of fabric in just 14 seconds. If you want to do it in the heat drying chamber at different temperatures, you'll need a few minutes."
Ultrasonic clothes dryer is effective when quick removal of water from clothes, and has a low power consumption, but produces a "cool mist" instead of warm moist air, as happens with conventional dryers (though this causes problems of humidity and mold). For this reason, scientists suggest to take the "emissions" of the dryer to the outside of the building, but who knows, maybe the next step for scientists will be to develop ways to re-use of condensed mist for washing the next load of Laundry.
According to the U.S. Department of energy Laboratory and GE are jointly working on the development of a commercial version of the product, and plan to have the prototype into production this autumn. If we assume that the ultrasonic dryer becomes cost-effective method for upgrading of commercial washing machines, it will significantly reduce the cost of electricity for drying clothes. published
