Experts at MIT have developed a sponge that boils water

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT), George and gang Chen has created a device in the form of a sponge, which is able to boil water using only solar energy. Scientists believe that their invention can become a revolutionary new way to heat water for residential homes and industrial enterprises.

Traditional methods of converting water to steam due to the energy of the sun use expensive special lenses and focusing mirrors. The new technology is simpler and cheaper.

The sponge consists of a special foam, heat-conducting material and bubble wrap. The structure of the device includes a copper plate that absorbs the different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. That is, if you put it in the sun, it begins to absorb heat. Is this the time to pass through the sponge, it begins to heat and turn into steam. Bubble wrap performs the function of a lens, focusing the sun's light on the film, bringing the water to a boil.

According to scientists, the invention can be used not only for heating of residential premises, but also to sterilize or desalinate sea water.
