Space debris in orbit can be "shot" with a laser

Currently, space debris, in large quantities in Earth orbit, threatening the International Space Station (ISS) and a plurality of artificial satellites and space stations in the movement, with the help of jet engines, the only way to avoid a collision with space debris.

NASA is not offered to adjust the trajectory of the spacecraft and of the collection, exerting influence on his laser beam ground.

Laser system should work together with ground-based telescopes and radars monitoring the potentially dangerous space debris. When a threat is detected the collision, the laser is located near one of the poles of the earth, guided by ground-based designator, I began to "fire" in a pulsed mode of flying in space debris.

The estimated capacity of polar laser is only 5 kilowatts, such power would be enough to push it out of orbit to 10 objects per day. The authors of this idea argue that the practical implementation of the laser system will require not so much additional research, all of the technologies that will be used, are well known now.

More about this technology can be read here.
