"Smart" dogs suffer more than "dumb" mouse

Perhaps the ability to feel the pain depends on intellekta

Marc Bekoff, professor emeritus at the University of Colorado - one of the first cognitive ethology in the United States. He raised the issue of ethical treatment of animals: according to him, smarter than the animal, the more it suffers. Under US law, animals such as mice and other rodents, birds, fish and invertebrates do not receive little or no protection from abuse and sometimes are not considered animals. Indeed, about 99% of the animals used in the studies are not protected by federal law.

Scientists recently discovered that animals are capable of cognition, emotion, consciousness and sensitivity - therefore, they can suffer and feel pain. Man puts the animal experiments, without taking into account their ability to various experiences.

If we consider that dogs and cats are "smarter" mice, and they suffer much more because they are able to understand what is happening to them. And animals with big brains like primates, elephants and dolphins may suffer no less than men, because they enough power for complex forms of consciousness. But just as all animals are similar to the human nervous system that allows us to conclude that all of them - and vertebrates and invertebrates - are able to feel pain.
