"Hearing worm" stuck at the holders hyperactive sound cortical mozga
In 2007, the magazine «Rolling Stone» conducted a poll among its readers: what song could be called the most annoying in the world? When the voting is over, the magazine published a top-20 songs, which included «Who Let the Dogs Out», «Macarena» and «My Humps». Now imagine that these songs playing in your head constantly, 24 hours a day, not stopping for a moment.
In 99% of the population of the planet Earth and then get stuck in your head so-called "auditory worms": the song playing in my head, and it is impossible to get rid of it.
Usually "hearing worms" will sooner or later disappear, but not all - of the world there are a lot of people who suffer from this continuously. These tunes, known as musical hallucinations, heard in their brain is incredibly clear, almost as if you're playing on the radio.
Dr. Victor Aziz and Dr. Nick Warner from Wales decided to find out where are the musical hallucinations - they examined 30 people who suffer from this disorder.
Doctors conducted PET brain scans to their patients: in the primary layer of the auditory cortex, the part of the brain that determines the height and volume of the sound, everything was in order. But in secondary and tertiary layers of the auditory cortex (secondary layer is responsible for harmonizing melodies and recognition of rhythmic pattern, and a tertiary layer brings together all parts of the song that people could perceive it as a whole composition) observed the same activity as if next played radio.
The researchers suggested that these parts of the auditory cortex in patients hyperactive if the ear does not hear any real sound, the auditory cortex of the brain starts to work "overtime" and interprets any incoming signal to the brain, as the music. Perhaps that is why deaf people are so susceptible to such hallucinations - they long to hear that their brains desperately handles all signals and turns them into a song.
So far, the medicine is powerless - how to get rid of the "hearing of worms", no one knows.
