Marginal separatism

Then, in 1996, the theme of separatism in Ukraine was something far more related to the armed conflict in the Caucasus or in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Few could imagine how 18 years later Crimean separatists with the help of Moscow for a month will make a peninsula subject of the Russian Federation, and nothing inconspicuous district center Slovyansk Donbas will gradually turn into such an analogy, "East European Ichkeria».

When you look at the performances of the "people's mayor" Sloviansk Vyacheslav Ponamareva or Crimean separatists and the newfound Russian official Sergei Aksenov, the question arises - how in modern conditions in Eastern Europe leaders are openly bandit elements who manage at the same time enjoy the support of a certain part of the population? And indeed the Ukraine is not a country with a long history of interfaith or clan rivalries. Thus today we see how cleverly entire regions are under the control of criminal gangs who proclaim a policy of self-determination on behalf of all citizens. And none of these fighters for the creation of the "Donbass", "Kharkiv", "Odessa" and other republics had not been seen in any political activity. Is that with the exception of Sergei Aksenov, who with his "Russian Unity" could muster no more than three hundred supporters on Lenin Square in Simferopol. Hence the question - who actually are these people with claims to authority?

In the early 90s, when the Soviet Union was in full swing "parade of sovereignties", to the political arena as leaders of national movements for self-determination out of personality, in which there was no biography of dark spots like prison terms or links with the underworld. Quite the contrary - the national mobilization led by people such as Shakespeare in Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia, scientists Orientalists Levon Ter-Petrossian of Armenia and Azerbaijan Abulfaz Elchibey.

At the root of separatist movements in South Ossetia and Abkhazia were also natives of the academic environment. The first head of the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia Chibirov Ludwig - writer and ethnographer, Hist. The first de facto president of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies, where he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of historical sciences. Doctorate future rebel already defended in 1985 at Tbilisi State University.

Chibirov remembered that compromised with official Tbilisi. Signed in May 1996, a Memorandum of security measures and the strengthening of mutual trust between the parties actually ensure peace in the region. In fact, gradually reintegrate South Ossetia in Georgia, which is not very happy with Moscow. Therefore, in 2001, the unrecognized republic with the tacit support of the Kremlin led Eduard Kokoity - master of sport wrestling and businessman with a criminal past. The apotheosis of his "presidency" was the Georgian-Russian war in August 2008

The war in Abkhazia was one of the bloodiest conflicts in the territory of the former USSR. Abkhaz separatists again openly supported by Russia. The main strike force soldiers were from the Confederation of Mountain Peoples of the Caucasus, the Cossack warriors, and stationed in the region of the Russian armed forces. And who knows what would have happened the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict, if an opponent Vladislav Ardzinba in Tbilisi was a former professor at Tbilisi State University, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, not overthrown last sculptor Tengiz Kitovani and kingpin Jaba Ioseliani.

Today, watching the scene in the Crimea and the Donbass, you can draw one conclusion - Ukraine faced not with a classic national separatism (in this case, Russian-speaking) elites. What ideas for residents of the Crimea could generate a former crime boss, better known by the nickname of the fictional creatures in the works of the genre of fantasy? What kind of self-determination for the Donbass can argue his self-proclaimed leaders, including former MMM network manager, trainer and dog handler and a Cossack? We have witnessed a new type of separatism, which is a marginal social revolt with the support of a strong external players interested in the complete destabilization of Ukraine.

Once the purpose of the movement for national self-determination was to achieve full independence with access from the USSR. 20 years after independence supporters of Donbas want back in the Soviet Union. It seems the circle is closed.
