The vessel "Monchegorsk" was intercepted by a US Navy ship in the Red Sea in 2009 on suspicion that it was carrying weapons from Iran to Syria in violation of the prohibition of the Committee for UN Security Council sanctions against Iran. Upon request, the US Cypriot authorities detained the ship and escorted it to the port of Limassol. The Cyprus government has recognized that the ship has violated the ban and announced that on board were "materials that can be used to produce weapons." All cargo - more than 90 containers, was removed from the "Monchegorsk" and delivered to the warehouse. After that, the ship was allowed to leave the island. Official information about what the containers exploded from that vessel, not yet confirmed. Cyprus News Agency reported only that the fire broke out two containers of gunpowder, which led to explosions in the warehouse, which contained 98 containers.

According to recent reports, the explosions 12 people were killed and 30 wounded. State agency CNA reports that among those killed five firefighters, four soldiers of the National Guard and two sailors.

On the site of the explosion came Cypriot President Demetris Christofias.
