Russia drowns Klaipeda port

In Lithuania remembered: if great neighbor runny nose - they pneumonia
The rapid development of sea trade port in Ust-Luga (Leningrad region) is seriously concerned about Lithuania. The new director of the port of Klaipeda Social Democrat Arvydas Vaitkus, confirmed in office after the verdict of the Special Investigations about his loyalty, clearly outlined the danger to his country's future. "The annual growth in the Russian port of Ust-Luga is 10 million tonnes, - he stated at a meeting of the Confederation of Lithuanian Industrialists. - To the port of Klaipeda is the growth of competition, because Georgia is a major oil and coal, which will ship in Tallinn, Riga and Ventspils. In these ports marked a corresponding reduction in cargo, so their marketing in the future will be more aggressive against Belarusian goods and transit goods of other countries ».

Indeed, in the port of Ust-Luga, which began work in 2001 with the opening of the coal terminal, it is rapidly increasing its capacity. Last year, its turnover reached about 47 million tons, by 2020 it is planned to reach 180 million tons. Given that, according to Vaitkus, in Klaipeda, this figure under favorable circumstances can only reach 83 million tons. And under adverse - only 51 million tons. And if a few years ago seemed to many in the Baltics from Russia propaganda sounding declarations of intent to "intercept" the Baltic loads, but now the situation is viewed with serious concern.

While serving as deputy prime minister, Sergei Ivanov, evaluating new transit capacities of the Russian Federation, including in connection with the port of Ust-Luga, said that by 2015 Russia will have enough of its resources to stop all exports through the Baltic ports. This task he described as "ambitious" and said that, they say, the Russian Federation "will not feed the" Baltic ports. In the Baltic capitals ironically reacted to these plans, deciding that the Deputy Prime Minister is angry, for example, in Estonia for the demolition of the "Bronze Soldier" to Latvia - for the pressure on the local Russian who in large numbers are denied the right to citizenship, to Lithuania - for the desire to rewrite the history of World War II. And just scares, making political statements. Perhaps, Ivanov took into account these circumstances, however, voiced through his Russian plans lay pure economics.

The new director of the port of Klaipeda today talking about it in no uncertain terms. Competition is competition. It has its own rules. The director needs to be a country to invest in port development, its infrastructure. Reduced investment he called one of the greatest threats to the enterprise.

However, the policy Vaitkus yet mentioned, but in the same economic environment. He recalled the difficult relations between Lithuania and Belarus. The local elite, as you know, not just constantly scolds Alexander Lukashenko, calling him "the last dictator of Europe", but also tries to create conditions for a mass protest in the neighboring country to another "color revolution." In Vilnius privechayut Belarusian opposition - here even established its structure, sometimes called "alternative Embassy." But one-third of goods, which rolled in Klaipeda - Belarusian. And humanly: if you constantly Hayot economic partner, but at the same time there is an alternative, then why on earth do good unpleasant companion? And last year, Alexander Lukashenko said that he discussed with Vladimir Putin, the problems of the Belarusian cargo. He promised to redirect it from the Baltics to the ports of Russia. In principle, taking into account the economic and political ties between Minsk and Moscow, logical decision.

Lithuanian politicians at first did not believe the words "father", noting that Klaipeda Belarus offers more favorable terms, and capacity of Russian ports is not allowed to pick up the goods. But now it turns out that it was the power of the Russian ports are growing rapidly and plans to Alexander Lukashenko, if it fulfill its "threat", the first stage of the Russian ports to transfer 20 million Belarusian cargo a year from 60 million exported in general through the Baltic States. And we'll see. It is natural to assume that such steps will be stimulated by the president of Belarus and the relevant Russian preferences - based on mutual benefits.

He recognizes this danger and vice president of the Confederation of Lithuanian Industrialists Gediminas Rainis, who noted that the "threat" of Alexander Lukashenko, in principle, real, and these intentions are not quite so expensive that were not realized.

There is another "threat" to the Baltic ports, including Klaipeda. Our Russian entrepreneurs exported through these large volumes of goods, and not all will go out in part because they take into their own hands more local port resources. Exception - just Klaipeda. "The influence of the Russian capital on the east coast of the Baltic Sea is increasing all - says the agency" Interfax "the former director of the Klaipeda port, now a member of the Seimas, the Liberal Eugenijus Gentvilas. - In the ports of Latvia and Estonia, the Russians have already established themselves. On the one hand, it is a guarantee that the ports do not lose the Russian cargo. But they have become dependent on Russia. Klaipeda is able to avoid it, what evidence - weak Russian cargo flows, barely reaching 13 percent of total turnover. Further strategy neighbors may be as follows: they either strengthen their invasion, or deprive us of their goods ».

Even economic roughness between Belarus and Russia have a negative impact on the performance of the port. Arvydas Vaitkus admitted due to known disputes related to potash fertilizers, are significantly reduced their loading. The situation resembles the one local saying about the economic relations, which became a saying: If Russia runny nose, Lithuania - inflammation of the lungs.

And if only from the East to the Lithuanian port was a threat! That's in the Polish port of Gdynia write that he is not a competitor of Klaipeda, but with the advent of the highway Via Baltica and European railway Rail Baltica, it turns out, can take the initiative. Port deepen, broaden, there are building warehouses, terminals, paving streets and railways, and he will be able to take large ships from China.

... Yes, 10 years ago in Vilnius, did not take seriously the plans of Russians related to Ust-Luga. And three years ago dismissed. And now worry. And Gdynia may happen. Only then the policy will not sew.
