Wadi al-Salam means "Valley of Peace" is an Islamic cemetery, located in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq. The cemetery covers an area of 1485 hectares and 5 has more than 5 million graves.
Wadi al-Salam is also the only cemetery in the world, where the burial process continues for more than 1,400 years.
During the 2003 war Iraqi forces used the cemetery as a refuge and a place for an ambush. US troops did not know then about the underground galleries and secret hideouts in the cemetery.
