El Hierro is a Spanish island that uses only green energy

El Hierro: the only green energy

Tiny Spanish island, which is home to only 10,000 inhabitants, is going to create a small ecological miracle. El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, plans to completely disconnect from the traditional electric network and switch to renewable sources of energy. The island can become completely self sufficient next month when we will be running a wind power capacity of 11.5 MW.

El Hierro already installed a water turbine that generates electricity, and after the commissioning of new power plants by wind power, it will allow the island to move to full self-sufficiency.

El Hierro already has a noise in the news around the world a few years ago when the island announced its plans to switch to renewable energy sources. At the same time, the authorities of the island were large-scale preparations for the implementation of such a seemingly utopian ideas. Now the dream came close to reality. Thanks to the turbine and the new vetroparka, by the end of next month the island will have sufficient capacity to meet all their needs — including for the operation of desalination plants on the island. Moreover, calculations were made to ensure that the demand for electricity even in calm days.

The island actually generates enough power for its residential needs with just the turbines, but wind energy allows El Hierro to have a little extra power to be used for pumping fresh water from the lake near the Harbor in the tank, which is placed in the volcanic crater at an altitude of 2300 feet above sea level. In calm days, when wind farms are idle, the water will gradually descend from the reservoir to the turbine provide additional power. With so simple ideas, the island will always have enough energy.
